The Perfect Finish
Polished Concrete Floors
Here at QPOD we’ve noticed that polished concrete floors have become an increasingly popular choice for both residential and commercial builds due to their durability, low maintenance, and sleek look.
One key advantage we find with using QPOD is that due to the absence of polystyrene, there are no unsightly cracks or floating polysytrene to cause divots in your finished floor.
So if you are considering polished concrete floors for your project, especially with QPOD’s sustainable foundations, it’s crucial to understand the technical process that brings these floors to life.
Below we break down the 2-step process in acheiving the perfect look when it comes to polished concrete floors.
Step 1: Grinding (or Honing)
The first stage in polishing concrete is grinding, sometimes referred to as honing. This is the process where a thin layer of the surface is mechanically removed. It can be done between 10–20 days after the concrete is laid, but it’s also possible to grind older surfaces. The goal is to expose the aggregate while smoothing the surface.
There are varying levels of grinding that reveal different amounts of the underlying aggregate. These levels include:
- Natural grind: This removes 0 mm of the surface, keeping the aggregate mostly hidden.
- Salt and pepper grind: By removing 1–2 mm, this method exposes a bit of the aggregate for a subtle, speckled look.
- Light grind: A removal depth of 2–3 mm, exposing more of the stones embedded in the concrete.
- Medium grind: This takes off 3–4 mm of the surface, revealing a significant portion of the aggregate.
- Heavy grind: With more than 5 mm removed, large portions of the aggregate become prominent, giving the floor a bold, textured appearance.
The deeper the grind, the more aggregate is visible, making the selection of aggregate a critical decision in the overall aesthetic of the finished floor.
Step 2: Polishing
Once the grinding phase is complete, the real transformation begins with the polishing process. Polishing is all about refining the concrete’s surface by gradually using finer and finer abrasive pads. The initial stages of polishing use coarser grits, which help to remove any residual roughness left from the grinding process. As the polishing progresses, finer grit pads are used, each step reducing surface imperfections and bringing out more of the concrete’s natural shine.
For example, a 100-grit pad leaves the floor with a slightly rough, matte finish, still maintaining some texture. However, by gradually stepping up the grit—first to 200, then 400, and eventually all the way to 3,000—the concrete surface is honed to an ultra-smooth, reflective finish that resembles polished stone or even glass.
But achieving a high-quality polished floor isn’t just about removing material with abrasive pads. After the initial rounds of polishing, the concrete undergoes a densification process. This involves applying a densifier—a chemical hardener that penetrates the concrete’s pores. The densifier reacts with the concrete, making it stronger and more resistant to wear. This step is crucial because it enhances the floor’s durability.
Once densified, the floor is ready for the final stages of polishing. A microfilm or sealant is burnished into the surface during this phase, further enhancing the floor’s gloss and adding a layer of protection.
Important Factors To Consider
A few notes
When honing or polishing a concrete floor, several factors affect the final appearance and performance:
- Aggregate Colour: The color of the exposed stones plays a large role in the final look. Be sure to choose a concrete mix where the aggregate matches your desired aesthetic.
- Concrete Colour: Pigmented concrete can complement or contrast with the aggregate. Select a colour tone that enhances the overall design.
- Aggregate Shape: You can opt for angular stones for a sharper look or rounded pebbles for a softer appearance.
- Depth of Honing: This determines how much aggregate will be exposed. Shallower honing shows less aggregate, while deeper grinding reveals more of it.
- Level of Honing (Smoothness): For a rougher, more natural look, you can stop at 100 grit. For a smoother, reflective finish, polishing up to 3,000 grit will provide a mirror-like effect.
- Protection: Sealing or treating the floor is essential to protect it from wear and tear. Using a specialised system, such as a densifying agent, ensures the floor remains strong and resistant to damage.
A note on fibre reinforcing:
If you’re planning a polished finish, it’s generally best to avoid fibre reinforcement. While fibres can replace steel links in footings and ribs, they often become visible once the surface is ground, leaving small hair-like marks across the polished floor. Even with methods like bug rolling (used to push fibres down before finishing), results can vary depending on the fibre type and grinding depth.
For a guaranteed clean, consistent polish, traditional steel reinforcing is still the safest option.
Final Thoughts
Conclusion
Polished concrete floors, especially when combined with sustainable solutions like QPOD’s foundation systems, offer a durable, eco-friendly, and visually stunning option for any build. With the right combination of aggregate exposure, honing depth, and polishing techniques, you can create a surface that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
