RECYCLING FOCUS

Why Are QPODs Different Colours?

If you’ve been following us on social media for a while, or been to one of our Open Sites you might have noticed the variety of colours that a QPOD can come in.

From black to a full spectrum of pretty vibrant colours, they definitely catch the eye. One question we often get is whether these colours have a specific meaning or indicate different uses for the pods. The answer? Not at all!

In this article, we explore why our QPODs come in such a colorful array and the real reasons behind these vibrant choices.

100% Recycled : Our Committment to Sustainability

Our QPODs are made entirely from recycled plastics, aligning with our mission to create earth-friendly foundation solutions. By using recycled materials, we reduce the demand for virgin plastics, cut down on waste, and contribute to a circular economy.

The varying colours in our QPODs are a direct result of the mix of plastics we recycle. Unlike virgin plastics, where colour can be tightly controlled, recycled plastics come from a variety of sources—bottles, packaging, AUTEX, car bumpers and other post-consumer products. This mix means that the final product may come out in a range of colours, predominantly black, but sometimes with speckles of other hues.

Why Are They Mostly Black?

You’ll notice that most QPODs are predominantly black, and there’s a good reason for this. In the recycling process, black dye is often added to the plastic to unify the varied materials and mask any inconsistencies in colour. Black pigment is highly effective at absorbing light, which helps hide the wide array of shades present in recycled plastics.

In fact, studies in polymer recycling show that black is one of the most efficient colours for recycled products because it can incorporate a greater mix of post-consumer materials without showing visible flaws. According to research on recycled plastic usage, black is used as a standard because it provides aesthetic consistency while allowing for the maximum use of mixed-source plastics .

The Rainbow of Colours

Though black is dominant, sometimes our QPODs come out with a splash of color—hints of blue, green, red and even clear. These variations happen when specific plastics that carry those colours are more prevalent in a particular batch. This unpredictability is one of the unique aspects of using 100% recycled materials, and we embrace it as part of our eco-friendly process.

The beauty of this approach is that every QPOD tells a story of its recycled origins, reflecting the variety of products and plastics that have been repurposed into your next foundation.

By opting for a 100% recycled product, you’re helping reduce plastic waste and supporting a future where building materials don’t come at the cost of the environment. And while our QPODs may come in different colours, they all carry the same commitment to quality and sustainability.

So the next time you see a black QPOD or even one with a colourful streak, know that you’re holding a product made from 100% recycled materials—one that’s part of a bigger mission to build smarter, greener, and more responsibly.
